“Ashamed” LockBit ransomware gang apologises to hacked school, offers free decryption tool

Last month, the largest school district in Illinois, Olympia Community Unit School District 16, became the latest victim of a ransomware attack. The attack was launched by an affiliate of the notorious LockBit ransomware group, and the leak site on the dark web was counting down to April 12th when it said it would release all of the stolen data – unless a ransom was paid.

Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operations, like LockBit, put the ability to launch ransomware attacks into the hands of anyone who is approved to become an affiliate. This means that digital extortion is no longer the exclusive domain of tech-savvy criminals.

However, it appears that the affiliate responsible for the attack against Olympia CUSD16 had broken LockBit’s rules, and the group has expressed remorse for the hacking into the school district’s servers. LockBit’s admin updated its leak site with an apology and offered a free decryption key, and claimed that the responsible partner had been blocked from using the ransomware in future.

This incident appears to be a rare example of a ransomware gang showing a degree of empathy and compassion towards its victims. Although criminal groups like LockBit have spent years profiting from the misery and hardship of others, it is encouraging to see that they are capable of recognizing the consequences of their actions, and are willing to take steps to lessen the pain of those affected.

In conclusion, it is possible that ransomware gangs can have a heart. LockBit appears to have done the right thing in this instance, but it remains to be seen if this is the start of a trend or just a one-off gesture.
