Recently, a study has revealed that hackers are now exploiting Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to steal passwords. Traditionally, hackers targeted databases to steal passwords, but this new angle involves using AI tools to capture a user’s keystroke patterns through a microphone. By analyzing the distinct sounds of typing, cyber-criminals can decipher passwords from recordings.
In an experiment, researchers positioned an iPhone just 17 centimeters away from a Mac and were able to decode words typed into the laptop. They achieved an impressive 95 percent success rate in distinguishing between typing within a document or a web page. Similarly, during a Zoom meeting, researchers boasted a 93 percent accuracy rate in detecting passwords.
Dr. Ehsan Toreini, leading the Cybersecurity division at Surrey University, explains that each keystroke produces a distinct sound, which AI tools can analyze to estimate the phrase or password being input. This raises concerns about the potential for acoustic cyber-attacks, where sonic surveillance is used to capture textual information.
