Google Workspace Client-Side Encryption Now Generally Available in Gmail, Calendar

This week, Google announced that its client-side encryption (CSE) for Gmail and Calendar is now generally available for Workspace customers. This feature provides an extra layer of protection for data and helps customers meet compliance requirements.

Google initially rolled out CSE for Gmail in beta in December 2022 for select Workspace customers. It is now generally available for Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus customers, for all supported services. This includes Calendar, Docs, Drive, Meet, Sheets, and Slides.

CSE gives customers sole control over their encryption keys, as well as the identity management service for accessing those keys. It encrypts data before it reaches Google servers and allows users to send and receive emails or create meeting events with external parties, knowing that their sensitive data is secure.

Google Workspace also encrypts data at rest and in transit, providing customers with a comprehensive security solution. This expansion of CSE capabilities significantly reduces the burden of compliance for enterprises and public sector organizations.
