Ransomware Attacks on Educational Institutions: A Growing Concern in Cybersecurity
In a recent threat analysis report by Comparitech, it was revealed that educational institutions in the United States faced a surge in ransomware attacks in 2023. Schools and colleges encountered over 121 malware incidents, a significant increase from the 71 attacks reported in the previous year.
The repercussions of these attacks were profound, with educational institutions losing an average of 12.6 working days due to ransomware, compared to 8.7 days in 2022. The financial impact was also substantial, with recovery costs ranging between $540,000 and $560,000 from 2018 to 2024.
The introduction of the Cyber Incident Reporting for Critical Infrastructure Act (CIRCIA) in October 2025 aims to provide more accurate data on these incidents. Under CIRCIA, schools and educational institutions are required to report cyber incidents within 72 hours, with a reduced timeframe of 48 hours specifically for ransomware attacks.
Comparitech’s research underscores the lack of preparedness among many educational institutions to combat such attacks, often due to funding shortages and a lack of cybersecurity expertise. This situation could escalate if not promptly addressed.
On a positive note, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has initiated a Cybersecurity Pilot Program for schools, allocating approximately $200 million over the next three years. This program aims to assess and mitigate cyber risks faced by educational institutions effectively.
Additionally, a joint advisory from the FBI and CISA has been issued regarding an Iranian hacking group known as Pioneer Kitten, Fox Kitten, UNC757, Parasite, and RUBIDIUM. This group has been targeting the healthcare and educational sectors, infiltrating networks to steal sensitive data and demanding ransom under the threat of data release.
In related news, cities and counties are taking proactive measures to prevent ransomware-related losses, signaling a positive shift towards enhanced cybersecurity. Local governments are now allocating budgets for cybersecurity, indicating progress towards achieving greater resilience.
As the threat of ransomware continues to evolve, it is essential for educational institutions to prioritize cybersecurity measures and stay vigilant against potential cyber threats. Stay informed, stay protected, and be proactive in safeguarding your institution’s digital assets against malicious actors.
