The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) has appointed Antwan Banks as its director of enterprise security as part of the organization’s shift towards end-to-end security for the trucking industry. Banks is an Operation Desert Storm veteran, and has previously served as director of cybersecurity for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, as well as a senior security engineer for Turner Broadcasting System, and as a security consultant for the US Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Disease Control.
The NMFTA has been analyzing the cybersecurity of heavy vehicles for several years, and recently disclosed two vulnerabilities affecting trailer brake controllers. The US government has also been looking to boost the cybersecurity of the transportation industry over the past years, issuing directives to the aviation and rail sectors.
The NMFTA is a nonprofit membership organization for motor carriers operating in interstate, intrastate and foreign commerce. It has developed standards and assigns codes that identify transportation companies and locations.
In appointing Banks as its director of enterprise security, the NMFTA is ensuring the safety and security of the trucking industry, and has prioritized the digitization of its LTL fleets with a collaborative approach to open-source API’s to replace manual and paper processes. Banks’ experience in cybersecurity and his understanding of the industry will be a great asset to the NMFTA in meeting its goals.
