A new ransomware called ‘8Base’ has emerged, targeting companies that do not prioritize the protection of customer and employee information. This ransomware gang, known for double extortion tactics, first appeared in March 2022 but has recently become more active. The criminals behind 8Base have been publicly shaming their victims on their blog, sometimes targeting up to 6 victims in a single day.
According to a report by VMware’s security division Carbon Black, 8Base Ransomware is linked to a cyber criminal group called RansomHouse, which is involved in extortion and associated with another cybercrime group called FIN8.
Since June 2023, 8Base has targeted over 67 victims, mainly businesses in Brazil and the United States. Their goal is to expand their attacks to firms in various industries by September of this year. Malwarebytes threat detection team has confirmed that the criminals are specifically targeting companies in the manufacturing and construction sectors, and have successfully disrupted the computer networks of 43 companies so far.
In related news, Microsoft is set to announce a special ransomware repelling feature for Windows 11 PCs by December this year. The feature aims to block malware attacks of any scale, but it is unclear whether it will be available to individual licenses or only to bulk licenses connected in a network. Details about how this feature will differ from the existing Microsoft Windows Security feature, and whether it will be a separate download or integrated into the current security solution, remain unknown.
